Background : Urinary tract infections are very common, occurring in 1 out of 5 women sometime in their lifetime. Though UTIs are common in women, they can also happen to men, older adults and children. One to 2% of children develop urinary tract infections. Each year, 8 million to 10 million visits to doctors are for urinary tract infections. -Asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB), defined as the presence of bacteria in the urine of an individual without signs or symptoms of a urinary tract infection, is thought to be present in 3%–5% of young healthy women and is more common in patients with diabetes and elderly persons. Even though AB appears to be associated with adverse outcomes in some groups, such as pyelonephritis or preterm delivery in pregnant women , little is known about its role among young women with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
